End of Season Hive Check
Filmed at The Honey Herd Apiary in Anglesey on 04.09.2025. 🐝
Today’s video covers the final hive inspection of the year. As we enter autumn and winter, inspections must be quick and gentle — queens are difficult to replace at this stage, so avoiding unnecessary disturbance is essential.
From now on, I’ll only be hefting the hives to monitor their weight and check winter stores. The colonies won’t be opened again unless a serious issue appears, helping reduce stress and conserve energy for the colder months.
Treating Bees for Mites with Apivar Strips
On 22 August 2025, at The Honey Herd Apiary, I treated NUC 2 (a double-brood colony) for varroa mites using Apivar strips. This short video shows how the treatment is applied and why it’s essential at this point in the season. Keeping varroa under control is crucial for maintaining strong, healthy colonies heading into winter.
NUC 3 Inspection After 2 Weeks – Eggs, Brood & Growth
On 8 August 2025 at The Honey Herd Apiary, I checked in on NUC 3 after a 2-week break. The colony looks strong and healthy, with eggs, brood at all stages, and plenty of capped worker brood. I didn’t spot the queen this time, but the presence of fresh eggs confirms she’s active and laying well.
It’s great to see this nuc developing so nicely, and I’m hopeful it will keep building strength as the season progresses.
